Circumscribing Constant-Width Bodies with Polytopes

Makeev conjectured that every constant-width body is inscribed in the dual difference body of a regular simplex. We prove that homologically, there are an odd number of such circumscribing bodies in dimension 3, and therefore geometrically there is at least one. We show that the homological answer is zero in higher dimensions, a result which is inconclusive for the geometric question. We also g...

Gas Sensor Based on Large Hollow-Core Photonic Bandgap Fiber

One concern in using photonic band-gap fiber (PBGF) as a gas sensor is the response time. In this type of the gas sensors, response time is the time required for gas to diffuse into the hollow-core. So considering a large hollow-core PBGF (HC-PBGF), the response time can be significantly reduced. But in the large HC-PBGF, the fundamental issue is the presence of higher order modes (HOMs). Somet...

POLYTOPES OF LARGE RANK FOR PSLp4, Fqq

This paper examines abstract regular polytopes whose automorphism group is the projective special linear group PSLp4,Fqq. For q odd we show that polytopes of rank 4 exist by explicitly constructing PSLp4,Fqq as a string C-group of that rank. On the other hand, we show that no abstract regular polytope exists whose group of automorphisms is PSLp4,F2k q.

Polynomial time vertex enumeration of convex polytopes of bounded branch-width

In the last years the vertex enumeration problem of polyhedra has seen a revival in the study of metabolic networks, which increased the demand for efficient vertex enumeration algorithms for high-dimensional polyhedra given by inequalities. In this paper we apply the concept of branch-decomposition to the vertex enumeration problem of polyhedra P = {x : Sx = b, x ≥ 0}. Therefore, we introduce ...

Mean Width of Regular Polytopes and Expected Maxima of Correlated Gaussian Variables

An old conjecture states that among all simplices inscribed in the unit sphere the regular one has the maximal mean width. An equivalent formulation is that for any centered Gaussian vector (ξ1, . . . , ξn) satisfying Eξ2 1 = · · · = Eξ2 n = 1 one has E max{ξ1, . . . , ξn} ≤ √ n n− 1 E max{η1, . . . , ηn}, where η1, η2, . . . , are independent standard Gaussian variables. Using this probabilist...
